The Festival should naturally take place in Germany and I will come out of my recent retirement from live work to also perform for this cause. Will the Sons Of Europe answer this call to arms - even if their only weapons could be an acoustic guitar and some drum sticks? Or, after all these years will "Festivals End - As Festivals Must"? Portuguese language gives to the last track of this album ("Winds Of Fortune", inspired by the ancient town of caserta) a neverending magnetism; Alessandra Santovito - mind and voice of the HEXPEROS project (ex-GOTHICA), her vocal sound is very delicate and melancholy. Her vocal lines are like ancient sound paintings; Alfredo Notarloberti - well-known among the fans of the folk-gothic italian scene, and not only. Alfredo gives to this album a touch of melancholy thanks to his unique sound: warm and visionary; Corrado Videtta - mind and voice of the ARGINE, famous italian band. His vocal style well fits both in performing and singing; Luigi Rubino - ASHRAM's pianist, other well known italian band, works on one of the finest instrumental tracks of the album, inspired by Paris; Francesco Villani - talented pianist, son of Art (Virgilio Villani), working in lots of musical contests, above all in jazz, for this collaboration he returns to his beginnings as classic musician; Francesco Perreca - talented clarinettist, already working in folk popular music. GJOLL are two individuals, Johann Eiriksson (member of the musical projects REPTILICUS and PRODUCT 8) and writer/vocalist Sigurdur Hardarson (member of the black metal band FORGARDUR HELVITIS). Way Through Zero is their initial release. Within the first minute you will be haunted by the story's musical visualization. Each of the five parts stands for itself, showing the evolution of the man's mental state: from depressed to aggressive and then finally released. Various astounding sounds are found within its isolated shell - pulsing sub-basses, synth layers over a driving rhythmic sequence, noise drones, ambience with high frequency sonic attacks and silent melodic phrases. If we should dare a comparison then the scandinavian dark industrial sound isn't that far from the 'Way Through Zero'. An important fact about the album's concept: this story happens in the present. Moralists, advertisements and politicians are mentioned by GJOLL as oppressors; while today's western consumer society is the cause of anger and hate. Besides the mythic 'Nostalgia', the pictures of nordic rune stones included in the plain, beautiful artwork are part of GJOLL 's self-conception: "These stones carry memories of the past and all our digital creations will never last that long. We will be a gap in history. We don?t have any romantic visions of life having been very nice in the viking times, when the runestones were made, but back to those basics is where we might be going." This material was gathered during two years (under project research named Clausthome) using different ways of radio waves scanning, data gathered by radio telescopes and archives of universe research data servers. It was a sound analysis experiment, where material and after-processing of both Earth and cosmic authentic static radiation were used, applying different sound alteration programs and sampling methods, as well as sound synthesis creating music environment. It is a process of translation and transformation that leads towards awareness of that potential environment, which can be created using the gathered material. CD comes in a silver-black digisleeve with an insert and is limited to 500 copies. Stigmata recommends this release. Undercurrents and lost horizons it's the natural continuation of Dun Scaith, with varied folk songs and minimalistic dark-ambient soundscapes, trying to be a journey through the geography of Celtic sacred symbols, like the burial mound, the well, the stone, the oak, the forests... It has a straight connection with the traditional symbolism of water/death/night as the idea of wandering through the otherworld can only be conceived as a ritual death, the passage to another state of being, of consciousness. |
